“All knowledge, the totality of all questions and ALL answers in contained in the dog.” Franz Kafka
This weekend I’ve been lucky enough to spend it working on ‘Dogs of Deal,’ a book I started when I moved to Deal in the summer. It is an illustrated account of many of the amazing and varied dogs who walk and live in this wonderful town, which does look like it’s a dog walking paradise.
I’ve been drawing Duke, a very laid back white Bull Terrier. About a month ago I was emailed by Marcus, his owner, to be a part of the book and so I went round to Duke’s house and joined them for a walk.
It turned out to be a very enlightening & entertaining walk. Watching Duke closely, how he lifted his shoulders and head up to try and make himself taller and slimmer if he wanted to impress another dog. How his two back legs cross over when he walks so he has a real bum wiggle, a real swagger. He looks so calm and amenable, but then he’d suddenly stop and refuse to move (especially if it was getting near home) until he’d decided nothing more interesting was on the table!
Suffice to say I’ve fallen for the amazing Duke!
Here are some sketches in inks and watercolours of Duke on his walk. If you’d like to be involved in Dogs of Deal please contact me through the website, I’d love to hear from you.
